Admirals sweep Blazers over two games, win in double overtime Sunday
Benton Harbor, MI - Sunday afternoon history was made in the ABA! The
West Virginia Blazers played the second of a two game set against the Lake
Michigan Admirals in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The historic "3/10 & Out"
rule came into effect for only the second time in the ABA's history.
Ironically, the West Virginia Blazers have been involved in both
historical events! The "3/10 & Out" rule occurs when both teams are tied
after regulation play, then tie again after overtime, the team that scores
10 points first in the final overtime takes home the victory. The newly
formed Lake Michgian Admirals showed why they're a team not to be
overlooked.
The Lake Michigan Admirals and West Virginia Blazers were tied at the end
of the first quarter 28 - 28. The Blazers (ranked #11 in the ABA Power
Rankings) took over the second quarter and outscored the Admirals 37 - 29
to take a halftime lead 65 - 57. After a halftime performance by the
Benton Harbor High School Pep Band, an appearance by Miss Michigan, and a
motivating halftime speech by Head Coach Mike Ahrens and Assistant Coach
Buck Riley, the crowd of over 400 people were ready to see their home team
come out firing. They were not disappointed as the Admirals responded to
the crowd outscoring the Blazers 37 - 18. Dominick Melton had 13 of his
game high 31 points to ingnite the Admirals to a 94 - 83 lead after three
quarters. Jaman Montgomery of the Blazers scored 30 points overall, but
most notably hit the game-tying shot at the end of regulation play with
the score being 127 - 127. Owner Chris Glisson commented "You couldn't
put two more evenly-matched teams on the same court as we're seeing
tonight!" There were five minutes put on the clock for overtime and again
the teams evened up the score 136 - 136. In the final overtime, the "3/10
and Out" rule came into effect. The first team to score 10 points wins
the game and that's just what the Admirals did sweeping the West Virginia
Blazers 146 - 139. Little did they know, the fans of southwestern
Michigan got to witness history in the making!

Admirals defeat Blazers 132-123
St. Joseph, MI- The Lake Michigan Admirals were not going to let the West
Virginia Blazers take the wind out of their sails especially not in front
of their faithful 400 fans on a Saturday night at Lake Michigan Catholic.
The crowd was in the game all the way to the end and so were the Admirals.
The first quarter was a neck to neck battle with the Blazers leading
27-25. But the Admirals answered back with a 41-22 second quarter run
making the score 66-49 at the half. The second half seemed to be the same
but the West Virginia Blazers were not ranked #11 in the ABA for nothing.
They were not going away without a fight. The Blazers came within four
points towards the end of the game but Odgra Bobo put the game away with
two straight three pointers to put the iceing on the cake. Odgra Bobo,
Jeremy File, and Dominick Melton all scored 21 points a piece to lead the
Admirals balanced attack. Cedric Brown lead all scores for the Blazers
with 38 points. Final score 132-123 Admirals. Admirals are now 1-1 for the
season.
